If you’re new to contracting, perhaps coming from a permanent role, there are a few things that may be unfamiliar to you. As a contractor, you will need to complete a timesheet in order to get paid for your work. If you’re wondering ‘what is a timesheet?’ worry not – we’ll explain what they are and how to complete one in this quick guide.
What is a Timesheet?
For a contractor, a timesheet is a document that breaks down the days and hours you have worked. Depending on how you get paid, it might be something you complete weekly or monthly, detailing the days or hours you have worked.
Your contractor timesheet could typically include:
- Contractor name
- Assignment details
- Dates worked
- Hours worked
- Overtime (if applicable)
- Client/manager approval
- Signature or digital approval
What are Timesheets Used For?
Timesheets are predominately used to work out how much you should get paid. You enter what days/hours you worked, which gets multiplied by your rate(s).
Sometimes, your agency or end client will also use timesheets for resource planning, in order to see how many staff hours have been used for a particular task or project.
Salaried workers will generally not need to complete timesheets, unless your employer uses them to track overtime.
How do Umbrella Companies Use Timesheets?
Umbrella Companies like Danbro use timesheets to bill/invoice your end client or agency for your services. The agency then pays this invoice, and we process the funds to you through PAYE, making the necessary deductions to HMRC.
If you have multiple different rates of pay, for example a weekday rate and a weekend rate, or a daytime rate and a night rate, your umbrella company will use your timesheet to ensure you get the right amount for each shift.
How Do I Fill Out a Timesheet?
Generally, your timesheet will simply need the hours you worked, on which days, and on which rate.
Who you submit the timesheet to can vary though, depending on the relationship your agency has with your umbrella.
With Danbro Umbrella, you’ll generally fill and submit your timesheet electronically on our OnePortal. You can also submit any allowable expenses here.
However, if your agency has a ‘self-billing arrangement‘ with us, you will only need to send your timesheets to your agency/end-client. They will then generate an invoice and pay us the correct amount. Again, we then process this to you after making the necessary deductions.
